… today we walked down to the circle and Emilee and Kaitlyn spotted a chipmunk that had been hit by a car. It was quite dead, but not really sqwooshed so it elicited a series of questions:
- Where is his eye?
- Where is his mouth? (head was crushed a bit)
- How did he die?
- Will he go to heaven?
All pretty standard questions for a young look at death… but then both Emilee and Kaitlyn wanted to say a little prayer for the chipmunk… so he will get to chipmunk heaven… They both walked back, clasped their hands together and were silent for a moment. I knew they were serious when Emilee crossed herself… Kaitlyn followed suit as closely as she could. In the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit…. Afterwards Kaitlyn said “but Daddy… we didn’t say anything for the prayer!”
They want to come back tomorrow to make sure the chipmunk made it into heaven… I hope the neighbors give him a proper burial before we get back there… Emilee asked if I could talk to the train conductor tomorrow and get him to make the train go faster.
