Steam and Team Fortress 2 running on a BSD – PC-BSD with an NVIDIA driver, in this case, but it may apply to other cards and other games. Using Wine is always so intricate, it seems.

Remember how suddenly a large chunk of Internet traffic was suddenly routed through China, briefly in early 2010? Apparently it’s happened a few more times since then. This article at the Economist talks about that and the SCION project, in an accessible way.

The 2011 Interactive Fiction Competition has released this year’s entries, and almost all of them can be played online. (via) There goes a few hours of your life. Sorry.

Speaking of hours, there’s apparently a civil lawsuit that has rendered timezone data unavailable. Here’s a good summation. It’s a frustrating scenario. (via multiple places)

How much disruption happened in DragonFly after introducing a dynamic device system? Surprisingly, very little, as most of pkgsrc still builds. Thanks are due to Hasso Tepper for the corrective work.

_why makes some very perceptive comments.

Jordan Gordeev’s been working on the very difficult AMD64 port as part of his Summer of Code work. He says thanks for the help, and others reply in kind. Speaking of which, it’s possible to boot 64-bit DragonFly now, though it’s not production-ready.

Matthew Dillon has committed a significant amount of work from Jordan Gordeev’s Summer of Code project, for AMD64 support. (It is very close to being able to completely boot an AMD64 kernel) As he says in the commit message, the code is the product of many folks, but with much credit to Jordan Gordeev for getting the work to this point. As far as I know, Jordan will continue working on this past the Summer of Code, which makes it a double success.
